How to add to the dictionary of the spell checker?

For example, the spell checker currently thinks that the words renormalization and variational are misspelled.

The spell checker is your browser's native spell-checker. You'll have to type the text outside the PhysicsOverflow editor (or in source mode) to be able to obtain the contextmenu ("right click menu) where you can add a term to the dictionary.
